					Archivio di G.’ is a recent series produced as part of ‘Nuova Generazione. Sguardi
contemporanei sugli Archivi Alinari a project curated by Camera Torino in collaboration with
Fondazione Alinari ( Firenze).

					
The exhibit features 60 whimsical photograph cards, made in response to some original
Cartes de Visite I found in Alinari’s storage boxes. The actual documents were produced by
Giuseppe Wulz and date back to 1885 ca. Such visiting cards, as an early form of social media
were commonly traded among families and visitors in the 1860s. In this series I revisit their
purpose and convert it into a classification method of the present day where digital and
analogue coexist.‘Archivio di G.’ is divided into 4 subcategories: Mankind, Flora &#38;amp; Fauna, Machines and Text
each containing a subtle reference to the realm of Nature. The 4 sculptures are a 3D printed
rendition of each category and serve both as a dwelling and repository for the cards.

Magic Lanterns 2020 (ongoing)
Magic Lanterns is an ongoing series in which I construct collages using discarded glass slides from museums and
institutions across the world, beginning with a collection from The Princeton University Art Museum, New Jersey. The
staff were disposing of these objects, as they had been in the process of digitising the whole collection, and so the slides
no longer had a purpose. Each of them depicted an archaeological finding or sculpture with its corresponding
description on one of the sides. I scanned each miniature plates, enlarged and then collaged onto, to playfully accentuate
the mysteriousness and fragmented nature of archives. In building my own (archive), unbound by external perspective, I
seek to destabilise the linear narratives that have dominated our thinking around the past, and the approaches prevalent
in its institutional presentations. I mutate these thought-obsolete objects, halting their deterioration by re-cataloguing
them, assigning them new story and meaning while drawing them back to our present context and in connection with
my practice. The slides become figments of imagined histories, remnants that have been pushed to the margins,
distorted, and drawn back to the centre.

					
Other than the actual magic lantern slides, I have been adding to my collection some digitized slides downloaded from
different online sources and started to include documents with natural elements and landscapes too. Some of my
assemblages are made by scanning the original documents along with some abstract puzzle cut-outs, while in others I
would rework a digitized document directly on photoshop by erasing or adding new elements onto the original file. The
result is a collection of finds from the past where statues, vessels, artefacts and nature are all brought together to form a
revamped historical categorization. The one element that brings consistency throughout the whole archive is my
insertion of abstract cut-outs. Hence, the recurrence of these fabricated elements in almost every slide represents the
main criteria under which my classification is recorded.

					
By putting in dialogue real data and imaginary visuals, I aim to emphasize the fluidity and metamorphosis of objects
and meanings as well as to stress how narratives from the past are not always indisputable. To me, this ‘updated’ archive
has a dual purpose with respect to preservation of memory: on the one hand to treasure testimonies from the past
(ancient imagery depicted), on the other hand to expose these vanishing objects (magic lanterns).The slides are in fact on
the verge of disappearing. They have lost their scope as functional objects since nowadays most museums are digitizing
archival documents. They are on the threshold of becoming artefacts themselves, to become part of our collective
memory of the past.</description>

Sculptural Entities, 2020


Sculptural Entities aims
to investigate the relationship between organic and artificial forms but at the
same time between the ancient and the contemporary realms. It also comes as a
result of my interest in examining how knowledge and cultural heritage are
produced, organized and consequently authenticated. As a personal desire to
access and reconnect to the past whilst giving the possibility to the viewer to
explore historical narratives in an alternative way. In this case, by inspiring
critical thinking via visual stimuli rather than through systematic
dissemination of scientific data.


 In the series, I collect
digital imagery of mammoth’s findings and mix it with scanned cut-outs of
stylized dinosaurs’ 3d puzzles made of cardboard. Both the elements are
digitally cropped, hence removed from their original context, and reorganized
by myself under a fictional museum-like catalogue. The organic element is
therefore communicating with a man-made representation of a natural entity. In
comparing the two virtual objects, I aim to stress not only their
dissimilarities but also their common features. The pairing might at first seem
conflicting, but on a closer look, it seems as if the artificial object is
mimicking the movement of its companion on the left side.


 The small orange symbols at
the bottom right of each composition identify the page's numbers of this
fictional cataloguing and are, in fact, petroglyphs cut-outs from imagery of
prehistoric rocks found on the internet. Ultimately, the tension between
organic and stylized forms, the natural and the man-made, is levelled out both
by the use of black and white and the ambiguous background, a virtual stage for
the two suspended entities.

Modular Artefacts, Mammoth Remains, 2019
	
Inspired by the classification and arrangement of ancient art in traditional museums’ collections, I create my own catalogues of artefacts in a time that is in-between the present and the past, the historical and the fictional. By reconfiguring images from different sources, I populate these virtual pages with my own collection of surreal artefacts. The received view of ancient objects is deliberately distorted. 
The work aims to question the very idea that culture can be contained by national boundaries and institutions, revealing instead an entity in constant flux, subject to transformative processes of migration and exchange. Some archival images are presented untouched, while others are dismembered or combined with new limbs or partners. 
Objects become unrecognisable and meanings fragment; presented as floating entities they belong to neither specific time or museum.My source here is the digital collection of the Smithsonian Institution archives and the existing archival imagery function as a background where I add or remove elements from it. Sometimes I digitally erase all of the details so that I can insert new ones. The pre-existing images were glass negatives depicting historical findings, chronologically numbered from 1 to 5,075. My intervention aims to distort the original information by fabricating a new document in which real data of the artefacts are combined with new visual information.

PRIVATE COLLECTION, 2018


This work is a playful archive, where I
act as a collector who borrows images from ancient times and contextualize them
into imaginary landscapes and sci-fi scenarios. It is a personal journey between history of art,
archaeology and the digital era, where the boundaries between the past and the
future become undefined.


 The motivation behind the series comes from my
desire to ‘actively’ feel engaged when visiting an archive or a museum. In many museums collections, objects are static and
inaccessible, literally and figuratively, confined in environments that make
them somehow hostile to us. When looking at the artefacts behind a glass, the
feeling is that they are imprisoned in the past. The transmission of art historical knowledge in
traditional institutions is often entrusted to a rigid organization of objects
and hermetic narratives. Because of that, the dissemination of artefacts’ data
is for the most part instructional and academic and so the reception of
antiques, from the viewers’ perspective, is limited to a contemplative action.
The project function as a personal research
where I seek to explore alternative ways of accessing objects from the past, in
the form of digitized or ‘modular’ artefacts, for instance. In this way, the
relationship between the objects and myself become participative instead of
static and the transmission of information more enjoyable. Moreover, in choosing to disseminate the artefacts in a digital or printed form, not only I subvert their original meaning, but I
also liberate them and make accessible for everyone.

Caves and Myths, 2017

	
					The series portrays archival imagery of prehistoric caves along with ancient figurines,
digital drawings mixed with handmade collages. Bison and archaic objects,
mammoths and goddesses, all merged in a silent dialogue where different times and
civilizations coexist. The purpose is to establish a connection between the aesthetic of an ancient time and my
perspective from the reality of modern times. Hence to suggest a visual continuity
between two dimensions: the present, steeped in innovation, the virtual, the
uncanny...and the past, obscure and mysterious so as to be revived as an imaginary
realm.

					
With the use of collage techniques I remove, disguise and transform elements of found
historical imagery, while interrogating the production of history, in its construction as
well as its deconstruction. In juxtaposing traces of the past and those of the present, I
explore phenomena of nostalgia and obsolescence yet with a hint of humour between
the lines.

					
In the composition of each photograph, I aim to balance both materiality and
objectness of my subjects. I think of the whole process as a painting-like composition
where the photograph is the final step. As I mix together digital drawings, scanned
images and the use of bright colours, some of the resulting photographs have depth,
texture and three-dimensions, while other retain their bidimensional essence.</description>
